I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But I and tens of millions of others can see that Donald Trump is not a well man. Physically, of course, he is morbidly overweight, and despite his doctor’s report, carrying that much extra weight is just not healthy. His preferred diet of hamburgers and Diet Cokes isn’t helping.
Mentally, he just isn’t all there. He is a complete narcissist, and everything good is because of him (even when they are not), and everything bad is someone else’s fault. He bullies people and calls them ridiculous names like he’s in middle school, and he lies constantly and expects everyone to believe him. He either trots out one of his pat answers or talks incoherently in a word salad when he speaks.
But he hates the same people his MAGA followers hate, and those followers don’t seem to understand or care that he is destroying the American government even as he is illegally profiting millions by breaking laws while in office.
Former President Joe Biden has battled his stutter all of his life. He broke his foot a couple of years ago, which made him limp a little when he walked sometimes. He did a terrible job during a debate because he was understandably tired after he recently returned from more than a week of international actual government work.
Yet, even though he accomplished so much for the American people during his four-year administration, including ensuring that we had the best post-COVID economy in the world and rebuilding our global alliances, the media portrayed him as in cognitive decline, even though nothing was further from the truth.
Joe and Kamala were the ones who actually got a cease-fire accomplished in Gaza and could at least put a hold on Netanyahu. At the same time, Trump told him to do whatever the hell he wanted with Gaza, and the genocide continues unabated.
But Trump is obviously in actual cognitive decline, thinking all he has to do as president is issue executive orders, put tariffs on countries that the American people will pay, and play golf 40% of the time.
Trump allowed an unelected billionaire and his Cabinet members to dismantle our government, fire tens of thousands of federal employees, and close several government agencies because he doesn’t like what they do for the American people.
Trump and the MSM liked to call President Biden “Sleepy Joe,” but most of us remember WE could sleep at night knowing the president wasn’t trying to destroy us and the country every single day.
Just in the last week, Trump decided it was cute to publish an AI-generated picture of him as Pope, decided he should re-open Alcatraz to house criminals, put a tariff on foreign-made movies, thinking that all movies should be made in America, settling for millions of tax payer dollars with the family of Ashli Babbitt who was shot as she tried to break into the Congressional Chambers to murder members of Congress, showing that he had no idea what the Declaration of Independence was about (hint: rejecting the idea of a king in America), and stating that he’s not sure if he is supposed to follow the Constitution that he swore to uphold.
The Supreme Court's decision to give Trump immunity from criminal prosecution for any illegal actions he takes while he is president doesn’t help.
Also, the fact that the Congress is also under Republican control (even with small margins) means that impeachment and/or removal by the 25th Amendment are not viable options now.
Although two Democratic House members have offered Articles of Impeachment, the House must vote on them, and Speaker Johnson will not bring them up for a vote by the entire House.
Even if the Articles were voted on positively, the Senate Majority Leader does not have to accept them. As we found out twice before, even if there was a trial, the Republican majority would not vote to convict and put Trump out of office.
It is the same for enacting the 25th Amendment:
The process has to be initiated by the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet or another body designated by Congress.
A written declaration must be submitted to the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House.
While the Vice President immediately becomes the “Acting President,” the President can contest the declaration with a similar written declaration.
The Congress then has about 25 days to deliberate, and a 2/3 vote in both Houses is needed to uphold the Vice President’s role as Acting President. If the majority vote is not achieved, the president can reassume office.
With Republican majorities in both Congressional houses, and most of those Republicans solidly supporting Trump for various reasons, neither an impeachment/removal nor the enactment of the 25th Amendment is going to happen.
So, what can we do?
Our most important task is to ensure that the 2026 mid-term elections take place and are fair. Traditionally, the party in power loses seats in the midterms, and the Democrats must retake the majorities in both the House and Senate.
Having large majorities in both houses of Congress helped FDR and LBJ pass their extraordinary agendas.
Plus:
Keep protesting in the millions. The 50501 (“50 Protests, 50 States, 1 Day”) movement holds almost daily protests nationwide. They are having an effect.
Keep contacting your Congressional and statewide representatives. They do hear you, even in red states.
Keep reminding people, especially as things get worse, that it is Republicans who are upholding Trump’s disastrous policies and executive orders, which are not laws.
Support the agencies and organizations that Trump is trying to dismantle. Remember that most of what he is trying to do is unconstitutional. Although he tries to ignore the courts, he constantly loses in them. That is why he is trying to destroy the judicial system.
Encourage the Democrats to keep speaking out, and demand that they constantly speak for the people and against the Republicans.
Decide daily that you can do at least one thing to protect our democracy.
Stop worrying about who the Democratic presidential candidates may be in 2028. First, we have to get past 2026.
Are there any other ideas you can come up with?

Absolutely right. Ensuring the 2026 midterms are fair and successful is the most urgent task we face. Democrats must retake the House and Senate—not just for policy, but for the survival of democracy itself.
Read this article for some great ideas on how you can participate in saving our democracy. There’s a clear, actionable list of things we can all do to make this the most important and meaningful work of our lifetime.
Don’t sit this out. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Biden was also sick during the debate. When I wrote about this nearly a year ago on my Substack, I received numerous comments insulting my perspective and me. I am glad I am not the only one who noticed this.
One of Trump's biographers said Useful Idiot Krasnov has always worried about dementia because it affected his father who then developed Alzheimer's. His nephew said dementia and Alzheimer's runs in their family. We are definitely seeing it affecting Useful Idiot Krasnov now.
