In 1963 Ethel Waters performed during a weekend at my high school auditorium (George Washington High School in San Francisco). The performance wasn't for our high school, but for the general audience, and there was an admission.

I went to see her perform with a friend of mine when we were 16 years old. We knew Waters was a jazz legend even then, but we didn't yet grasp just how legendary she truly was.

Wow! What a great experience for you while you were in high school. Something similar happened with my young children in Ann Arbor. Somehow I got two free tickets for one of Sarah Vaughn‘s last concerts at Hill auditorium. I told my girls, who were 12 and 10 at the time, that they would not appreciate seeing Sarah Vaughan now but they would when they got older. So I made them go, and they did appreciate it later on in life. Thank you for your response.
