What a lot of people don’t know is that when the 16th Street Baptist Church was bombed in 1963, killing four young Black girls (Addie Mae Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Carole Rosamond Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley née Cynthia Morris), every Black parent in Birmingham that could afford to do so packed their kids up and sent them to Black boarding schools like Palmer.
