I actually live in Ocoee, FL, which today is a suburb of Orlando and a melting pot of different races and immigrants. My children learned about the Ocoee massacre through some discussions in school but, as you noted, it wasn't in any of their textbooks. My guess is that those types of discussions are not happening currently as Governor Ron DeSantis has made anything related to African American history taboo and told teachers they'll lose their job if they don't conform to his guidelines.

Hi Susan! You're right. Even my husband said that he'd never heard of the Ocoee Massacre! They will certainly continue to try to erase that event in Florida. I'm sure you're glad your children and grown and no longer in the Florida school system!

Yes, I'm glad my kids are no longer in school. I'm extremely disappointed in the quality of education and firmly against the ultra-conservative measures Governor DeSantis and team are trying to impose. Instead of focusing on what kids need to learn to be successful, they're dedicated to issues like banning books and bringing (Christian) prayer into school.

You are quite welcome! Even my husband said he'd never heard of the Ocoee Massacre, as did many of my readers.
