Issue #429 OpEd Monday, December 4, 2023
According to certain news sources, President Biden is at risk of losing support from young people because he’s too old, and also because he has been too supportive of Israel during the Israel/Hamas war. From CNN:
When Democrats win elections, it is frequently because of turnout by younger voters. In 2022, when Democrats held onto the Senate and only narrowly lost the House, CNN’s Harry Enten wrote they “would have gotten crushed” without younger voters.
So it is with alarm that Democrats must be looking at an NBC News poll out this week that confirms a dramatic drop in Biden’s support among young voters.
Biden is actually narrowly trailing former President Donald Trump among voters ages 18-34 in that NBC poll. Biden won voters ages 18-29 with 60% of the vote in 2020, according to exit polls. A CNN poll released in early November found a similar drop.
Apparently, Biden is also at risk of losing the Latino vote, because Latinos are dissatisfied with him as well. From The Los Angeles Times:
Democrats’ recent public attacks on Univision’s overtures to Trump reflected their painful awareness that any further erosion of Latino support would be disastrous for them next November. But the unfolding war between Democratic-leaning Latino advocacy groups and the network could hinder the Biden campaign’s ability to rebuild support among Latinos. Biden, who is polling lower among Latinos than any other modern Democratic presidential candidate has at this point, can ill afford to lose any more Latinos whether they watch Univision or not.
Oh, and Biden is also losing Black voters. From Politico:
There was a gulf, the Democrats said, between what Biden has accomplished in his first term and what voters give him credit for. They’d heard the complaints at work, or at home. They’d read the stinging op-ed in the weekly Black newspaper, the Carolina Panorama, which included the line: “For me, having to vote for Joe Biden is as grating as hearing fingernails being drawn across a blackboard, but I am out of options.”
Day by day, week by week, it seems like we get inundated with stories emphasizing all the things wrong with President Biden. Every week, another important voting block is said to be upset with him and is therefore determined not to vote for him in 2024. Assuming all of these doomsday stories are correct (although I’m not dismissing them out of hand, I’m not swallowing that narrative whole, either) the question that seems to be missing - or at least shoved to the side - is what we are in for if Biden loses.
But the bigger question - again, if these scenarios are anywhere close to accurate - is how could any of these scenarios be possible if we have an even moderately-informed electorate? How is it possible - I mean seriously, how is this possible -that President Biden is in a close race with Trump in a nation where sane people should outnumber the nuts? How is it possible that more and more people are said to be increasingly dissatisfied with Biden, while Trump’s ratings seem to remain stable and he’s not losing any support whatsoever?
How is it possible that Biden’s age (81) is still being hyped as an issue, yet no one seems to realize Trump (77) is nearly the same age?
Let’s take a look at the facts:
TRUMP:
Proven sexual abuser and rapist
Facing 91 charges in 4 separate criminal cases
Led an insurrection and nationwide movement to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, resulting in one death and multiple serious injuries.
Responsible for the two strongest years of job growth in history
Nearly 11 million jobs created since 2021
3.5% unemployment rate, the lowest in 50 years
Created 750,000 new manufacturing jobs
Infrastructure investments in all 50 states, D.C., territories, and throughout Tribal nations
More than 40 million borrowers stand to benefit from student debt relief
President Biden nominated and the Senate confirmed Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. President Biden’s other judicial appointees include record percentages of women, racial and ethnic minorities, and civil rights lawyers and public defenders. Sixty-six percent of President Biden’s nominees are women, and 65% are people of color.
And on…and on…and on…
And yet….
BIDEN is the problem?
So maybe Biden hasn’t done everything you wanted. OK. I’m willing to bet your parents weren’t everything you thought they should be either. If you’re grown, then you’ve lived long enough to know that people disappoint you sometimes, some more than others. But you should also know that it’s not fair to judge a person based on one or even several wrong decisions - or decisions you disagree with, to be more accurate - when there is so much more to that person than just those decisions that didn’t go your way. And I don’t think it’s a stretch to argue that President Biden’s record weighs far more heavily on the plus column than on the other side. I just don’t see how you can dispute that, especially not as a Democrat if you’re honest and know anything at all about the man’s record.
But then maybe you don’t know that much about Biden’s record. So then you need to ask yourself why is that? Why haven’t you heard about everything Biden is doing and has done, but are deluged with stories about Trump’s court cases and how Biden’s age is a problem?
And the final question; what are you going to do about it?

Perfect is definitely the enemy of the good, Ken. As for Detroit's historically poor showing at the polls, the biggest challenge is getting Detroiters to understand how this will affect them directly. Which, in a way, is the challenge for getting the national turnout we need in 2024. In Detroit's case, because so much of the population - close to 1/3 - is struggling, it's a daily fight to keep their heads above water. Some don't feel it can get much worse than it already is, and doubt it will ever get better because it never has. Changing that mindset will be a heavy lift. Thanks for your comment!
Perfect is often the enemy of good enough! And what can we do to get Detroit off its butt and voting?
