What We Lost with Trump in Office
And how we must get it all back.

It has been less than three months since the beginning of Trump’s second administration, and it is turning out to be even worse than we feared.
In 2016, President Obama and Secretary Hillary Clinton warned us about Trump. Hillary, especially, being from New York, knew about the horrible history of Trump there. People believed the lies and attacks against Hillary, including “but her emails,” and Trump was elected president.
In 2024, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris warned us about Trump, including what his first term told us about what his second term might entail. We all knew that Trump was running to keep himself out of jail. But too many people thought the price of eggs was too high and preferred voting for a criminal white man over a qualified Black woman, and Trump won the election with one of the smallest margins ever. He does not have the “mandate” he claims.
Since taking office, Trump has gutted the federal government, firing hundreds of thousands of employees and eliminating funding for agencies and programs whose policies he dislikes.
He also threatened to withhold federal funding from companies, states, and universities that do not adhere to his non-DEI policies.
He called for the elimination of birthright citizenship in the 14th Amendment and attempted to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act.
He has threatened law firms and individual lawyers who dare to bring cases against him.
He has broken 80+ years of relationships with our allies in Europe and Asia.
January 19, 2025, was the last full day of the Biden-Harris administration. In just four years, they got the country out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and about 75% of the population was vaccinated. They lowered inflation and the unemployment rate, increased the job rate every quarter, repaired the relationships with our allies that Trump destroyed in his first term, regained the respect of America globally that Trump also destroyed, and started programs that brought back manufacturing and building projects primarily in red states, among many other positive undertakings. Most of all, there was no drama, no scandals, no cabinet members or other officials actively trying to dismantle the government.
At this time, the Republicans in the House and Senate will never impeach Trump and remove him from office. Mike Johnson won’t allow impeachment articles to come to a vote, and even if the House did approve impeachment, sixty-seven members of the Senate would never vote to remove Trump. The Senate Majority Leader wouldn’t even have to accept the Articles from the House.
So, what can we do now to save our democracy?
We must regain the majority in the House and Senate, but that can’t happen until November 2026, and Trump is already trying to interfere with that election.
We have already won almost all the special elections since the last election, and there will be several more.
We must support the Democrats who are working against Trump and ensure that they let people know how the Democrats will help America while the Republicans are still backing Trump and his disastrous policies.
We also must continue with the nationwide (and worldwide) protests against Trump and Musk. When the protest numbers grow from 1.5% now to 3.5% of the population, they will activate actual policy changes from the government.
Most of all, we can’t get tired, and we can’t give up or give in, as some universities and companies are doing. As author Tim Snyder said, we can’t “…give up in advance.”
