No Instagram or WhatsApp either?
Earlier today, Monday, October 4, 2021, #Facebook, #Instagram, and #WhatsApp all went down all over the world all at the same time. As of this writing, all three apps, all of which are owned by Zuckerberg, are still down.
Luckily (and it IS just “luck”), #LinkedIn and #Twitter are still working properly.
For those people who are used to logging on to those sites for personal recreation and/or socializing, having those apps offline is a huge inconvenience.
However, for those who depend on those apps for a big part of their marketing activities, having them down so suddenly and for so long is nothing short of a catastrophe. There are probably Billions of sales being lost every hour that those apps are inaccessible.
I use an app that automatically, randomly, and repeatedly publishes some of my social media posts, and I have been receiving emails that those scheduled posts just aren’t being published. I set up those posts days and even weeks ago. Not good.
Email is still working
But do you know what is NOT down? My email list, and YOUR email list. As a business consultant, I ALWAYS insist that my clients build a viable email list. Your email list is YOURS; those apps do not belong to you and you have almost no control over how they operate.
Not only is your email list yours and separate from any and all social media outlets, but if you also keep an additional database of your prospects, clients, and customers in your email lists, you will always have their contact information. You almost never have contact information for your social media followers.
So my advice to you as someone who has worked with creative and solo professionals and small business owners for over a decade? Start, grow, and maintain your own email list as your primary point of contact. Don’t lose sales and communication opportunities just because Zuckerberg can’t keep his apps working for hours at a time.
