Today’s Black History WOW!
Charlie Wiggins was born on August 1, 1897, in Evansville, Indiana, and rose to prominence in the 1920s as one of the top African American drivers of his time. His most significant contribution to the sport was the founding of the Colored Speedway Association (CSA).
Jim Crow laws prevented African Americans from participating in mainstream racing events, and Black drivers were often excluded from professional competitions. Wiggins decided to create his own platform for African American drivers to showcase their talents.
In 1924, Wiggins established the Colored Speedway Association, which organized races exclusively for Black drivers and teams. Under Wiggins' leadership, the CSA held races at various tracks across the Midwest, attracting talented drivers and enthusiastic crowds. These events provided a space for African American drivers to hone their skills, gain recognition, and defy the prejudice that tried to hold them back.
Wiggins himself was an exceptional driver. Known for his speed, skill, and fearless demeanor on the track, he quickly became a crowd favorite. His racing career spanned over a decade, and he achieved many victories, earning him the nickname the "Negro Speed King."
Tragically, Wiggins' life was cut short when he died in a racing accident on August 11, 1931, at the young age of 34. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on through the Colored Speedway Association, which continued for a few more years after his death.
