When I read last week that the Michigan Senate actually voted to “ban racial discrimination focused on hairstyles”, my first reaction was to laugh out loud. Just to think legislation was required to allow Black folk to look like themselves in public.
The second thing I did was recall a somewhat related science fiction story I wrote for Detroit Stories Quarterly called Dread (DSQ Vol. 3, Winter/Spring 2019 edition can be purchased from the website) that deals with the issues of Black hair and why it’s probably in your best interest not to mess with it.
