The whitewashing of America has begun
On March 14, 2018, William H. Frey wrote the following in an article for Brookings:
“New census population projections confirm the importance of racial minorities as the primary demographic engine of the nation’s future growth, countering an aging, slow-growing, and soon-to-be declining white population. The new statistics project that the nation will become “minority white” in 2045. During that year, whites will comprise 49.7 percent of the population, compared to 24.6 percent for Hispanics, 13.1 percent for blacks, 7.9 percent for Asians, and 3.8 percent for multiracial populations (see Figure 1).
“The shift is the result of two trends. First, between 2018 and 2060, gains are expected to continue in the combined racial minority populations, with a projected growth of 74 percent. Second, during this time frame, the aging white population will see a modest immediate gain through 2024, and then experience a long-term decline through 2060, a consequence of more deaths than births.”
That was a little over a year after Trump was officially sworn in as President of the United States in January of 2017.
On the night of Aug. 11, 2017, Neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen and other white supremacists marched through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville bearing torches and terrorizing students with chants of "Blood and soil" and "Jews will not replace us." They chose this particular location for their Unite the Right rally because they were upset that the city had earlier voted to remove the massive bronze statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, which had once been a center of attention in a downtown park. The vote to remove the statue wasn’t just about being sensitive to the fact that General Lee fought to preserve the institution of slavery; it was about the fact that Lee was a traitor by any possible definition. And celebrating a traitor to the United States with a statue in the town square didn’t quite make sense to the sensible people of Charlottesville.
But to the Neo-Nazis, Klansmen and other various and assorted white supremacists, the open celebration of white supremacy made perfect sense. Because to them, America should be a whites-only country. After the death of Heather Heyer, who was killed by an angry white supremacist who drove his car into a crowd that was protesting the Unite the Right rally and the violence caused by the Unite the Right supporters, Trump at first struggled to condemn them and came as close as he ever has to sounding like maybe racism isn’t a good thing.
"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides, on many sides," was Trump’s first response, trying to walk the line and spread the blame with no justification whatsoever, let alone evidence that there was any blame to be shared. So then he tried to walk it back and clean up the mess.
"Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”
That was the last time Trump made any attempt to apologize for racism or racists. After the January 6 insurrection, where the Confederate flag was unfurled and flown inside the U.S. Capitol building for the first time in history by Trump’s white nationalist supporters, pretty much all bets were off. And once Trump was re-elected, it was time for the Great Whitewashing to begin.
Because Trump may not be that bright, but you’d better believe that he is well aware of those projections published by Brookings, and so are those who get to whisper in his ear. Those who reinforce his paranoia that tides of illegal, criminal immigrants frothing at the mouth pose the biggest threat to (white) America. And so, when it came time for the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, what do we see? From PBS:
“The bill would provide some $350 billion for Trump’s border and national security agenda, including $46 billion for the U.S.-Mexico border wall and $45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention facility beds, as he aims to fulfill his promise of the largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history.
“Money would go for hiring 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, with $10,000 signing bonuses and a surge of Border Patrol officers, as well. The goal is to deport some 1 million people per year (italics mine).
“The homeland security secretary would have a new $10 billion fund for grants for states that help with federal immigration enforcement and deportation actions.
“To help pay for it, immigrants would face various new fees, including when seeking asylum protections. … The Defense Department would have $1 billion for border security.”
And how does Trump propose to pay for all this? By robbing the poor, a disproportionate percentage of whom are non-white. Again from PBS:
“To help partly offset the lost tax revenue and new spending, Republicans aim to cut back on Medicaid and food assistance for the poor.
“Republicans argue they are trying to rightsize the safety net programs for the population they were initially designed to serve, mainly pregnant women, the disabled, and children, and root out what they describe as waste, fraud, and abuse.
“The package includes new 80-hour-a-month work requirements for many adults receiving Medicaid and food stamps, including older people up to age 65. Parents of children 14 and older would have to meet the program’s work requirements.
“There’s also a proposed new $35 co-payment that can be charged to patients using Medicaid services.”
So basically, the brown people he can’t deport, he will find a way to oppress. Because, as Frey very unintentionally made clear, the future of the white race in America is in peril. OK, not really. But with Trump in charge, do facts really matter?
The clock is ticking.
