We all know that Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. But in the United States, the 49th state, Alaska, can boast the top five tallest and most beautiful mountains in the country.
Here is some information about five of the tallest mountains in America.
1. Denali (Mount McKinley)
Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, located in Alaska, is the tallest mountain in North America, standing at an impressive 20,310 feet (6,190 meters). Interestingly, Denali started as a seafloor sedimentary rock, but due to tectonic plate activities, it was uplifted and transformed into the magnificent peak it is now.
In 2015, President Barack Obama made a controversial decision to rename Mount McKinley, which was named after President William McKinley, to Denali, an Athabaskan word meaning "the great one." President McKinley never even visited or have any significant historical connection to the mountain or to Alaska.
2. Mount Saint Elias
Alaska can also claim the 2nd highest mountain in the United States, Mount Saint Elias, which is 18,009 feet high. At the base of the mountain lies a vast ice field that attracts skiers and ice climbers from all over the world.

3. Mount Foraker
Mount Foraker, is the third tallest peak in the United States, standing at an elevational height of 17,400 feet. It's a fascinating mountain with steep slopes and impressive rock formations. The mountain was named after Joseph B. Foraker, an Ohio senator, in 1899. It's located near Denali and is part of the Alaska Range.
4. Mount Bona
Mount Bona is the fourth-tallest mountain in the United States, and it's found in the Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. This peak stands tall at 16,421 feet high and is part of the Saint Elias Mountains. It has enormous glaciers, which provide a spectacular view from the top.
5. Mount Blackburn
Mount Blackburn is the fifth-tallest mountain in the United States, standing at a height of 16,391 feet. It has a unique topography that includes an ice-covered plateau and a jagged peak. In 1900, the mountain was named after Joseph Clay Stiles Blackburn, a United States Senator.
While there are certainly many beautiful mountains in the "lower 48" of America when Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, our country also gained some of the tallest and most beautiful mountains in the world.
