It is already common knowledge that since at least 2016, Donald Trump has converted the majority of the Republican Party into the Trump Party. Although the MAGA wing represents only about 25% of the total electorate, and many Republicans have been voting against Trump in the recent primary elections, it is still shocking to see the Republican leadership staunchly supporting Trump.
Donald J. Trump is the only president or former president to be impeached (charged by the House of Representatives) twice. He has been found criminally liable for sexual assault. He has been found guilty of civil charges involving financial wrongdoings and libel and slander. He presently has indictments in four jurisdictions that include 88 criminal charges. He is currently on trial in Manhattan for paying hush money to a porn star (a misdemeanor) and for using that event to influence the outcome of an election (a felony).
Most importantly, he called his supporters to storm the Capitol to stop the counting of the Electoral College votes for an election he lost and called for them to kill his own vice president, Mike Pence, and the then-Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
Although a few Republicans have disavowed Trump, most Republican leaders, including the current House Speaker, most Republican members of Congress (including the current Republican Senate leader), several state attorneys general and governors, and at least three former primary presidential opponents are still supporting him.
Before any trial involving anyone begins, the indictment(s) must first be approved by a Grand Jury composed of ordinary American voters in the jurisdiction. The district attorney presents evidence of the crime to the Grand Jury, which then decides if there is enough evidence to proceed to a trial.
On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, the election interference trial brought by the Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg continued with the 2nd day of testimony by Attorney Michael Cohen, Trump’s former “fixer,” who was responsible for the $130,000 payment to “Stormy Daniels” to buy her silence about a sexual encounter with her while Trump’s wife was at home with their then-four-month-old son Barron.
The president of the United States, as well as all members of both Houses of Congress, took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. However, these leading Republicans have decided instead to “preserve, protect, and defend” Donald J. Trump instead of their Constitutional duties.
Because of his constant threats and intimidations of potential and current witnesses and jurors, Trump was fined and issued gag orders by Judge Juan Merchan. Trump has of course called the gag orders “unfair” and claimed that having to appear in court in person on the four-days-a-week trial days is hurting his ability to campaign for the 2024 presidential election. Judge Merchan told Trump that the next time he violates the gag orders, he could go to jail.
So now Trump has enlisted the assistance of Republican Congresspeople to speak to the press and public during the trial, saying exactly the things Trump repeatedly said that led to the gag orders. For just this trial, Trump is being tried on 34 felony counts out of the total 88 allegations against him.
On Tuesday, while completely ignoring the Constitution, the rules of law, and the fact that trials can occur only after every evidence has been presented to a grand jury, the Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (who is 2nd in line for the presidency after the vice president), North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and a few other members of Congress stood outside the courthouse defending Donald Trump, and then went inside to watch the trial for about 45 minutes. All of the politicians speaking were dressed in blue suits and red ties, just like Trump, and their speeches were edited by Trump.
The saddest and most disconcerting aspects of these showings of support of Trump are that they show that when it comes to Trump, these people are willing to completely dance to his tune and do and say exactly what he wants them to, cementing their status as part of the Trump cult.
It is shameful and dangerous for these Republicans, who used to be for “law and order,” to so obviously go against the rule of law and decry the judicial system, all to satisfy their Dear Leader. They will do anything and everything to keep Trump from receiving accountability for his (alleged) crimes and to get him back in the White House.
It is imperative that we continue to work to thwart their efforts.

If Trump edited the speeches he may have violated the gag order.
