As of the date of this article, it has been twenty-two days, more than three weeks, since there has been a Speaker of the House of Representatives. After one Republican House representative called for the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, and McCarthy was voted out, three representatives became “Speaker-designate,” but none of them was able to garner the 217 votes necessary to actually become the Speaker.
As Americans watch this sad and dangerous scenario unfold, many of them are not as familiar with how things work in Congress because comprehensive civics education has been sorely lacking in today’s education system.
