As some of you may know, I am a retired educator of all grades from Pre-K through college. Having a 20-year teacher as our Vice President brings me joy!
Teachers face many issues and challenges today, many more than when I was teaching. If Governor Tim Walz, with his background as a former teacher, were to become the Vice President, it could bring a valuable perspective to the national conversation about education.
We know that the right-wing doesn’t respect education or educators unless they fit their warped viewpoints. That is why they disrespected Dr. Jill Biden, who has still been teaching even when she was/is Second and First Lady, and they said that a doctorate in education was useless and unimportant.
That’s why Tim Walz’s experience as an educator is so important. Here are ten ways that having a teacher in the White House with Tim Waltz as Vice President could potentially help us:
Advocating for increased funding for schools, competitive salaries for teachers, and smaller classroom sizes to reduce the workload.
Implementing more professional development opportunities and mental health resources for educators.
Ensuring policies protect the right to access diverse and comprehensive educational materials with no book bans
Encouraging community discussions to oppose unwarranted censorship and promote intellectual freedom.
Giving teachers more autonomy to make decisions in the classroom while ensuring accountability.
Fostering a collaborative environment where teachers' insights and professional judgments are respected.
Upholding policies that maintain a clear boundary between religious instruction and public education.
Promoting a curriculum that respects and includes all cultural and religious backgrounds.
Encouraging the integration of technology and modern educational practices to enhance learning experiences.
Building stronger partnerships between schools, parents, and communities to support students' holistic development.
Teachers of America: Assemble!
Teaching is a challenging career, and the fact that much of society derides us means we have to take action.
Teachers and educators have a crucial role in shaping the minds of the next generation and influencing public policy. By organizing, advocating, and participating actively in political processes, we teachers can ensure their voices are heard and their issues are addressed. This could involve:
Voting and Lobbying: Participating in elections and lobbying for candidates and policies that support education.
Public Awareness: Raising awareness about the challenges faced by educators through social media, public forums, and community events.
Having someone like Governor Tim Walz, who understands the educational landscape firsthand, gives us the potential for significant positive change. By uniting and advocating for these concerns, teachers can play a vital role in shaping an equitable, well-supported, and forward-thinking educational system.
