The last time a Republican presidential candidate won the popular vote was in 2004, when George W. Bush defeated Democrat John F. Kerry and won the presidency with 286 electoral votes and 50.73% of the popular vote. In 2016, it wasn’t the American people who elected the Republican president Donald J. Trump, it was the Electoral College and voter suppression, the two best weapons Republicans have to keep themselves in power despite the will of the people.
Both will be in full effect for 2024, but especially voter suppression. Because the Republicans have seen the writing on the wall for some time now, and that voter suppression is one of the best ways to win states that in no uncertain terms, the majority of Americans don’t like what they’re up to and don’t want to be represented by their perverse policies.
Consider the fact that the accomplishments of President Joe Biden have received not nearly enough coverage for how they will make the country better and peoples’ lives better. The Republicans, on the other hand, have only managed to attract attention for not getting anything done except to continually fail at trying to prove how the Democrats are failing, because the Democrats aren’t failing.
But rather than put their heads together and come up with some conservative ideas that they think could possibly draw voters to their side (New and Improved Supply Side Economics maybe…?), they would prefer to steal an election by any means necessary. If not by hook then by crook.
Because Republicans don’t actually have any ideas to make the country run better, as evidenced by the fact that they keep trying to take credit for Biden’s successful ideas - after they vote against them.
So instead, they opt for crap like this so-called Election Integrity Bill they just put forward. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s little speech in support of the bill is a quick reminder that just because he finally had his arm twisted off enough to vote in favor of aid for Ukraine and Israel doesn’t mean he has suddenly become a rational human being.
But since they want to talk about ‘integrity’ in elections, why don’t we? Each state certifies its votes and certifies its electoral college votes on the first Tuesday after the 2nd Wednesday in December. In 2020, several Republicans tried to send “alternative slates” of electors to be counted. Oh yeah. Real live integrity at work right there, folks.
But a new Congress will be seated on January 3, 2025, and the Electoral College votes will be counted on January 6. This means we need to make sure that we have large enough margins in both Houses to overcome any members who want to try and steal the election once again by holding up the vote.
But while Johnson and the Republicans (sounds like a really bad boy band doesn’t it?) keep down the path of inventing crises to scare voters into voting for them, there continues to be evidence of voters - and sane people - simply refusing to go for it anymore. Even in heavily red states like Montana. This from Democracy Docket:
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I don’t think this race is going to be as close as those pollsters and others keep trying to insist. And the more events unfold, the more I think the evidence is leaning my way. But whatever it looks like, we all have to do our part and remain vigilant. We simply cannot afford to take anything for granted.
