Why I am repeating my 2020 Word for the Year
Near the end of 2020, like many people, I was thinking about what my “Word for the Year” would be for 2020. After such a momentous year filled with highs and lows, I was struggling with coming up with a word and theme that would hopefully help to guide me through this new and hopefully better year.
My 2020 Word of the Year: Reclamation

But my husband suggested that I keep my word from last year, “Reclamation,” and continue it into 2021. At the beginning of 2020, I felt that there were many things, mostly personal, that I had to reclaim to be better and more positively balanced overall. However, by March, it was obvious that the year 2020 had other plans for us all.
So I made the decision to bring my 2020 Word for the Year, “Reclamation,” over to 2021. So what are some of the areas of my 2020 life that I plan to reclaim and rework in 2021?
Personal, social, and family relationships. My husband and I are both natural introverts and were able to bring our work and businesses home last March. At first, we were cool with staying at home all the time. But by now, even we are tired of the isolation. At the time I am writing this, most of us have been through almost a year of restricted real-life interactions with others due to COVID-19. As the restrictions will hopefully be loosened and finally completed lifted throughout 2021, I look forward to reconnecting with people in all kinds of situations.
Business and professional offerings. In September 2020, after 54+ years of working three different career tracks, I finally completely retired from a traditional working life. Now in 2021, I am free to reclaim the parts of my businesses I really enjoyed and just do those activities going forward.
Home and Hearth. Now that I am retired, I have more time to concentrate on redecorating and remodeling our 105-year-old home in a designated historic neighborhood in Detroit. I am a natural homebody and love doing that kind of stuff. It will be increasingly important to beautify our home as both my husband and I are working and living from our house. I also love to sew, knit, crochet, play the piano, and work in my garden. I am really looking forward to doing more of those activities in 2021.
How has what happened in 2020 changed your life and your priorities for 2021? Please let us know in the comments.
