My Favorite Holiday Was Different This Year
For almost twenty years, part of my extended family has celebrated Thanksgiving with about 30–40 family members who gather at the 5-acre estate outside of Baltimore owned by my sister and brother-in-law. When we started this tradition, both of my parents were still alive, the grandchildren were actually children, and the great-grandchildren hadn’t even been born yet.
Over the years, we perfected the weekly schedule. People started arriving on Monday and Tuesday, shopping was done on Wednesday, the cooking started with everyone in the kitchen at once making their specialties, the BIG MEAL was on Thursday, family photos on Friday, we had a big party on Saturday, and people left on Sunday.
The tables were set with my sister’s finest linens, silverware, and glassware. Everyone dressed up, and speeches were made. SO MUCH FUN!
But because of COVID, everyone safely stayed home this year and cooked individually. Boy did the texts fly back and forth! We had a big family Zoom call on Thursday evening. We sure missed each other.
I decorated our dining room table and cooked an entire Thanksgiving meal just for hubby and me. That was fun because I love to cook. But we are certainly looking forward to 2021 when we can again ALL get together.
