Issue #260 Special Edition February 21, 2023
If you're from Chicago or Detroit, then you know that today is Paczki Day! For those of us who don't know, a paczki is a delicious Polish pastry that's traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent.
There is a city in Michigan that is completely surrounded by Detroit named Hamtramck. It was first established in 1798 and was named after the French-Canadian explorer, Jean Francois Hamtramck.
For decades, Hamtramck was a Polish enclave as many immigrants came to the city to work in Detroit's auto plants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The city was first incorporated as a village in 1895 and then officially granted city status by an act of the Michigan State Legislature in 1901.
The town has had a long and varied history since then, serving as a center for first Polish, and later Muslim immigrants, primarily from Yemen. Today, it remains a diverse community.
Hamtramck is the only city in metropolitan Detroit where you can get real Paczki. It is a tradition for many in the area to travel to Hamtramck very early in the morning on Fat Tuesday to get in long lines at one of the authentic Polish bakeries to get a dozen or more paczki to share with your family, friends, and coworkers,

What is Paczki Day and where did it come from?
Paczki Day is a special celebration that originated in Poland. It has since become a popular event celebrated around the world on Shrove Tuesday, or what can also be referred to as Fat Tuesday, which typically falls on the Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday.
In Polish culture, Paczki Day celebrates the traditional pastry called ‘pączki’ (which is pronounced as "poonch-key") filled with sugar and other delicious ingredients such as jam and custard. This joyous day was created at the start of Lent, with Polish people enjoying pączki with family or friends before beginning their fast for the upcoming weeks.
Paczki Day has evolved slightly over time, now being celebrated worldwide and enjoying pączki with different flavors.
The different ways you can eat a paczki (with butter, jelly, sugar, etc.)
Eating a paczki is so much more than just warm and fluffy goodness. When you bite into it, the possibilities are endless! Have it plain with some butter on top; if you want something sweeter, spread jelly, Nutella, or honey on it. Feeling adventurous? Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon for the classic sweet-tangy combo. Or go all out with any topping of your choice – fruit, cream cheese and powdered sugar, peanut butter, and banana...you name it! The best part about enjoying Paczki is that there really is no wrong way to do it. Just forget about counting calories on Paczki Day.
Have you ever had a paczki? If so, what is your favorite flavor?
