Happiness is a Choice
Monday is the first day of my week, and it is the first day of my work week. Often, people publish memes and statements that say how much they “hate” Mondays or even how on Mondays they are already looking forward to Friday. I prefer a different mindset.
One Day at a Time
Of course it is important to plan ahead, in both your personal life and for your business. But after the planning is completed and written down, it’s time to take things day by day. When you focus on just today, you won’t stress yourself by taking on too much, and you won’t neglect what is necessary to stay strong and healthy.
It doesn’t matter what your big goal is, taking it one day at a time while keeping your eye on the prize allows you to enjoy the journey on your way to the accomplishment. Every single step you take towards your goal moves you closer to that goal, and only thinking of the “end” could make you lose your focus — often the “end” is a very long way off and you will need to stay motivated.

The Olympics Motivate Me
I LOVE watching the Olympics and the Paralympics, from the Opening Ceremonies to the Closing Ceremonies, I try not to miss one single minute of the competitions. (Ok, the sport of curling makes me think of watching paint dry, but I love just about all of the other Olympic sports, the Summer and Winter Games.)
By the way, I found out this year that the name “Paralympics” does not mean “paralyzed” but is taken from the term “parallel.” The Games for the disabled were originally meant to run “parallel” to the original Games.
Each of the Olympic athletes represents the best of the best of their respective countries, and each of them had to train practically every day to reach their goal of even qualifying for the Games. The majority of them won’t even get anywhere near the championship podium, but they made it to Tokyo, taking it day by day.
Especially this year of 2021, when the Tokyo 2020 Games were postponed for an entire year due to COVID, it was even harder for the athletes to stay focused. As I watched the Games, I saw story after story about how the athletes overcame more than the usual struggles. Their training schedules were cut short. Many of them couldn’t even get to their regular training venues and had to improvise, including setting up a makeshift training facility in their backyards. But they did it. They kept training every day, even when the goal day was moved an entire year.
Monday is the First Day of the Rest of Your Week
You have probably heard that phrase: “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” If like me, you start your week on Mondays, how can you make Monday the best way to start your week?
The first thing you can do is be glad and grateful that you actually made it to this Monday. Many people did not make it to today.
The next thing to do is to be happy and grateful that you have a job and/or a business to work on this Monday. Many people do not have either.
Once you’ve recognized all of the positive things in your life, you’ll be less likely to focus on the negatives, and you’ll be ready to be happy on this Monday and on every Monday.
That’s what I am going to do.
