Fun Facts about Daylight Saving Time: Spring Forward!
Love it or hate it, most of the country will switch on the 2nd Sunday in March
Issue #270 Friday Funday March 3, 2023
Most of the United States will again change our clocks to Daylight Saving Time at 2 am on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
Daylight Saving Time adds an extra hour of light to the evenings by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. It occurs twice a year when clocks are moved forward in the spring and then backward in the fall.
It is called "Daylight Saving Time", not "Daylight Savings Time."

The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to save energy, reduce traffic accidents and conserve natural resources. During Daylight Saving Time, sunrise and sunset occur later than they would normally, leading to longer days and shorter nights. It also helps people who work or go to school during traditional working hours enjoy more daylight in their leisure time.
The following states and U.S. territories do not observe Daylight Saving Time (DST):
Arizona
Hawaii
Puerto Rico
The US Virgin Islands
American Samoa
Guam
Here are some fun facts about Daylight Saving Time (DST):
Daylight Saving Time was first officially used in World War I to conserve energy for war efforts.
In the US, DST is now observed from the second Sunday of March until the first Sunday of November each year.
The term “spring forward” or “fall back” is commonly used to describe how our clocks move ahead one hour in spring and then fall back an hour in autumn when daylight saving time ends.
The energy savings of daylight saving time is minimal at best and in some cases may even increase energy consumption due to increased air conditioning use during the summer months when DST is observed.
For those living in polar regions, where there's no real difference between night and day, big parts of the year can be spent without changing clocks for Daylight Saving Time.
You often will not need to manually adjust your clock as that's done automatically by digital clocks, computers, and other electronic devices.
Daylight saving time is observed in over 70 countries around the world!
