As you know, I usually publish my weekly “Choice” post on Tuesdays. This week, I waited until Wednesday to include the results of Tuesday’s very important elections in Wisconsin and Florida.
It was a good day for Democrats:
Susan Crawford decimated her Trump/Musk-backed Republican candidate to win the open Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. Musk tried to buy the seat by putting in over $25 million of his own money and dancing around in a cheesehead hat but to no avail. The Democratic candidate for State Superintendent also won.
Although we lost the two House seats in Florida in ruby-red districts that Trump won by 30 points, in FL-01, votes for Democrats swung 17+ points from November 2024, and in FL-06, votes for Democrats swung 19+ points from November 2024. Since January, Democrats have won or over-performed in special elections.
Meanwhile, African American New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker made history by speaking on the Senate floor for 25 hours and 5 minutes straight, talking about the dangers of Trump and Musk, how to save our democracy, and what Democrats must do to win going forward. Senator Booker beat the previous record of the racist South Carolinian Senator Strom Thurmond, who spoke against civil rights in the late 1950s and would have fought to keep Black people like Cory Booker from running for office or even voting.
Many Democrats, stung by last year’s election losses, are saying to wait until the 2026 midterms to get back on track. But we cannot wait that long.
Trump and Musk are already planning to severely damage, if not outright eliminate, the 2026 and 2028 elections through various voter suppression efforts and executive orders meant to move the majority of elections unconstitutionally (of course) from the states to the federal government under Trump.
We have to stay “woke,” stay ready, and fight every single day in one way or another to save America and Americans from those working hard to destroy us.
Yes, elections have consequences, but more work is needed than just elections. We must remind all elected officials that they work for us, not vice versa.
