Donald Trump has a bible to sell you. Sneakers too. But BIDEN is the one in trouble...?
Issue #548 The Choice Thursday, March 28, 2024
So the latest dispatch from the Republican Campaign Circus is that Trump is now a bible salesman.
A couple weeks back he was a sneaker salesman.
From Heather Cox Richardson’s March 26 Substack post:
Just today, Trump began to hawk Bibles for $59.99, plus shipping and handling, with a video message saying “Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country, and I truly believe we need to bring them back…. That’s why our country’s going haywire—we’ve lost religion in our country.”
The man actually says, “We must make America pray again.”
I think what he meant was “We must make America prey again.”
So here’s the thing; does this sound like a guy who is feeling good about his chances in November? Does this sound like someone who agrees with most of the mainstream media that this is going to be a really close race and that Trump is ahead?
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m gonna go with no. The man sounds desperate as hell.
Look, I know about the Gallup poll in February claiming that Biden’s approval rating has dropped to 38%. Taken on its face, yes, that’s disconcerting. I do have questions about how those polls were conducted, but let’s leave that alone for now. Let’s just stick with the 38%. Let’s co-sign the alarm, slam the panic button, and assume this percentage is correct and that Democrats are abandoning Biden in droves because:
He’s still too old
He has still not pushed for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and is too soft on Israel.
Nobody knows what he’s done
Polls show Democrats want a younger candidate
He’s not exciting enough. Not enough star power like Obama or Kennedy or Reagan.
Folks just not ‘feeling’ him
Whatever
OK. Maybe nobody likes him. But… did you hear about that Biden celebrity fundraiser tonight (Thursday, March 28) where the president is expected to raise more than $25 million? Together with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton? From USA Today:
The event is expected to raise at least $10 million and draw at least 3,000 people, Chris Korge, a veteran Democratic fundraiser and finance chair of the Biden Victory Fund, told NBC News. A photograph with all three presidents costs $100,000 and up, NBC reported, but the tickets to attend the program go for as little as $250 each.
And do you remember the $10 million he raised after that State of the Union speech? The one that he knocked out of the park? Or the $53 million he raised in February?
Altogether, President Biden has raised a whopping $155 million in cash on hand as of this month. You don’t collect that kind of cash from folks who don’t think you can win.
Bible Boy, on the other hand, has not released an accounting for his February haul. But by the end of January, according to the AP, his two major committees only reported $36.6 million in cash on hand. But they spent more than they took in paying lawyers trying to keep The Lord’s Anointed St. Golden Sneaker out of prison.
So Trump is going to trial on April 15 for violating campaign finance laws, he’s a convicted rapist, the majority of the money he’s raising for his campaign is going to pay his legal bills, and he has been reduced to selling gaudy gold sneakers and specialty bibles to try and offset the hundreds of millions of dollars he is facing in potential court judgments.
And yet somehow - somehow - the polls are asking us to believe that President Biden is the one in real trouble. I just kinda have a problem with that. Because if it’s true? Biden’s not the one in trouble.
We are.
