If you don’t have time to read any further, the title should pretty much fill you in about where this is going.
Throughout President Biden’s term in office, we heard virtually nothing about all that he has managed to accomplish against near-insurmountable odds. No one except Biden thought he could achieve even half as much as he did. But what we did hear about – a lot - was how old he was or how he fell off his bike.
When campaign time came, the complaints about Biden’s age ratcheted up in volume, again totally ignoring all that he had accomplished – or that Biden was the only one of all the Democratic candidates for office who could have pulled off what he did. The volume of complaints and Chicken Little alarm bells– largely in the media but elsewhere as well – reached ear-splitting level after Biden’s poor performance in his first and only debate with Trump. He got no consideration for the fact he was exhausted after maintaining a schedule that would have crippled most men half his age.
When the alarm bells wouldn’t stop ringing, and it was clear the media and his own party were determined to do everything they could to roadblock his path to a second term, Biden stepped aside and made way for his second-in-command, Vice President Kamala Harris. For one brief shining moment, Biden was showered with praise for doing the patriotic thing, for putting his country first. For giving us an extraordinarily qualified candidate who could have been this country’s first female president, a woman of Afro-Asian descent.
“I love my job, but I love my country more,” said Biden.
And Kamala appeared to have a significant wind at her back. At least that’s what it looked like. But obviously, that wind wasn’t as strong as some of us thought it was (I confess, I plainly said that Kamala would win in an earlier post), and Kamala lost to Trump. Within moments, desperate to find blame, a number of Democrats (including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, which I find both amazing and disgusting) blamed Biden for the results. Pelosi and others charged Biden with not stepping aside early enough, reminding him of his original promise during his first campaign that he was only going to be a one-term President.
So this time Democrats were again piling on Biden for not doing what they considered the right thing fast enough.
Then, on December 1, Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden. So naturally, true to form, the Democrats went totally berserk. It was almost as if they didn’t bother to read Biden’s explanation, which should have been more than adequate for anyone able to read. Biden had every right to pardon his son, who never should have been charged in the first place. From Biden’s letter:
The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the courtroom—with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.
No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.
I agree. And if this is truly the issue that is getting Democrats riled up and that dominates the headlines, then perhaps Trump is what we deserve. I never thought I would ever utter such a thing, but here is a man who has nominated a list of wholly unqualified sexual predators and drug abusers to lead some of this nation’s largest and most powerful institutions. The latest example is Pete Hegseth, who Trump chose to run the Pentagon. From Heather Cox Richardson:
Last night, Jane Mayer of the New Yorker reported that Trump’s choice for secretary of defense, Fox News Channel weekend host Pete Hegseth, had been forced to leave previous leadership positions at the advocacy groups Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America because of serious allegations of “financial mismanagement, sexual impropriety, and personal misconduct.”
Under his direction, Veterans for Freedom ran up huge debt for what appears to have been inappropriate expenses; the group’s donors squeezed Hegseth out of his job and then shuttered the organization. He moved to Concerned Veterans for America.
A whistleblower for Concerned Veterans for America reported that Hegseth was repeatedly so drunk at events that he had to be carried out, and that he once tried to join dancers on stage at a strip club to which he brought his work team. Their report said that Hegseth and other members of his team divided the female staffers in the organization into “party girls” and “not party girls” and sexually pursued them, leading to allegations of sexual assault. Another complaint said that at a bar in the early hours of May 29, 2015, Hegseth began to chant drunkenly: “Kill All Muslims! Kill All Muslims!
So yeah. Maybe Trump is just what we deserve.
People forget that the Democratic Party is a collection of six or eight sub-parties who don’t really get along. As AOC said, in Europe she and Joe wouldn’t be in the same party. A person can reasonably argue that Joe shouldn't have been pushed out the door, but I think he underestimated his physical deterioration. I also think Kamala did a hell of a job. She was beaten not because she “did it wrong,” but because a small crowd of very rich people have been pushing lies to Rural Americans (and lately urban) for forty years. Each would rather spend a billion dollars to destroy the federal government than spend the same money on taxes. You have to admit they pulled it off, and the Democrats, as well as the “Press,” were surprised twice, in 2016 and 2024. (I was too.) Have you noticed that the Democrats are forming a new command team, made up of all the same people?
I applaud every single thing you said.
Amen.
