You all remember January 6, right?
One reason why I ask the question is because those images of insurrection are what should be foremost in our minds as we head toward Election Day 2024 and do everything we can to continue spreading the word about why Joe Biden has to win a second term. And it’s not because he is the lesser of two evils; it’s because he is a truly great president who has the chance to put this country back on track - but only if we give him that chance. And yes, he is also a candidate who has made mistakes and wrong decisions. Just like every other great president in history. Maybe I’ll go through that list as a refresher course in a later post for those who just can’t seem to let go of their single-issue gripes.
But the other reason I asked that question about January 6 is that I continually hear pundits and others fretting, worrying, and wringing their sweaty hands together as they ask their audience to contemplate the horrors of what might transpire if Trump wins this election. And sure enough, I agree that if Trump does manage to disgrace the Oval Office yet again then that is pretty much the end of America as we know it. Turn out the lights.
But as I have also said, I remain one of those who not only don’t believe Trump will win, but I don’t believe this will be nearly as close a race as some of those same pundits are predicting. I freely admit I am not a professional pollster, nor have I engaged in lengthy surveys and/or voter focus groups. I simply happen to believe that with all the innumerable red flag flaws attached to Trump and his campaign this time around (rapist, twice-impeached, no campaign offices in any of the swing states, campaign practically broke due to funds being funneled to Trump’s lawyers, Biden campaign raking in the cash like a BOSS, all of those charges Trump is facing, he is visibly losing his mind, Republican Party fractured beyond repair, the abortion issue, etc., etc., etc.) there won’t be enough Americans blind or insane enough to want four more years of this on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Call me Pollyanna if you wanna, but I’m gonna go out on a limb on this one.
So out on that limb, let’s say that President Joe Biden does win re-election. Does that mean Happy Days Are Here Again?
You all remember January 6, right?
These MAGA minions may not represent the majority of Americans, but they represent enough of a threat to cause significant problems. Keep in mind that in 2020, there were exactly 74,223,975 Americans who voted for Trump’s re-election, and that was after he suggested they inject themselves with bleach as protection against COVID. That would have been a new record for the popular vote, if not for the 81,283,501 votes received by Biden.
I highly doubt Trump will get anywhere close to those numbers again, but that doesn’t mean MAGA is going to simply sink back into the mud and calmly accept its losing fate as it waits in darkness for the glorious rise of another mad dictator. These folks were pissed on January 6, 2021, and they will be even more pissed on January 6, 2025. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will plan another march on the capitol, because that would be stupid, even for them.
January 6 was an insurrection committed in broad daylight by thousands of mostly white people who had no fear of repercussion because they were white, their only experience with America was through white privilege, and they honestly thought they were going to win.
They didn’t. And it will not go better a second time around.
But come 2025, we need to consider which is worse: MAGA in broad daylight, or MAGA underground?
