On Sunday, October 27, 2024, Trump held a huge MAGA rally at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City. The rally immediately reminded people of a similar rally at the Garden on February 20, 1939, by a group of Americans who promoted Hitler and his policies as a template for how the United States should structure the country, especially in leadership positions.
However, Trump’s rally was actually worse than the previous Nazi rally. Yes, Trump’s rally was full of anti-Semitism, racism, misogyny, and outright lies. However, the small group that held the 1939 rally was not representing a political party or a presidential candidate. At the rally, Trump all but admitted that after the election, he knows he will lose AGAIN; he and his people (including the Proud Boys) will again contest the Electoral College votes on January 6 and send the election to the House of Representatives. In that scenario, each state legislature gets one vote, and the ruling of the majority, twenty-six of fifty votes, elects the president. The same situation holds for the election of the vice president.

So, first of all, if you’ve noticed, Trump has not been campaigning very hard at all, and he even told (former Republican presidential candidate Nikki) Haley voters he didn’t “need” their votes. This is because his plan is to try to steal the election again.
That was after he tried to claim that Vice President Harris was a false candidate because no one voted for her in the primaries. That is false, of course. During the Democratic primaries, we voted for Biden AND Harris. They were already a team, and we knew that by voting for Joe, we were also voting for Kamala.
Trump thinks he could have beaten Joe, so he is pissed. He conveniently forgets that Joe beat him once before and would have beaten him again.
Meanwhile, Republicans nationwide are actively trying to suppress or outright eliminate votes from Democrats and young people on college campuses. They are planning to attempt to use fake electors again, specifically in states where Kamala wins the popular vote.
Some college students were falsely told that in order to vote on campus, they must provide documentation that they cancelled their registrations in their hometowns. That is patently false.
They’re trying to make any voter with a “Hispanic-sounding name” show their birth certificates in order to vote.
They tried to get Nebraska to change its laws awarding EC votes by district to a “winner takes all” policy instead because one district in Nebraska always votes Blue, and if Kamala had only 269 EC votes, that one vote from Nebraska would give her the 270 needed.
The Republicans are trying to delay or eliminate turning in their EC votes in states and jurisdictions where they are in charge, hoping to give Trump another EC victory.
Trump has already stated that he will “declare victory” on Election night, as he tried to do in 2020, because the Republican votes cast on Election Day are counted first. In many states where Republicans are or were in charge, laws were passed that said thousands of absentee and mail-in ballots cannot be counted until after the polls close on Election Day. The Republicans feel most of those mail-in and absentee votes are from Democrats especially since Trump dissuaded his supporters from voting absentee, which will delay some states’ final counts for 1-5 days, leading Republicans to charge fraud.
By the way, mail-in voting started way back during the Civil War so that Union deployed soldiers could vote from wherever they were.
Republicans have tried to delay or discount absentee/mail-in ballots from “Americans Abroad,” our military members abroad, claiming most of those votes would go to Democrats.
Republicans are also trying to claim that mail-in ballots that are not RECEIVED by Election Day, should not count, even if the postmark is by Election Day; again, because they believe that most mail-in ballots are by Democrats.
People who have been egged on by the MAGAs set dropboxes on fire in Portland, Oregon, and two other places in Washington State. Both Oregon and Washington are Blue states, but those people are 1) trying to reduce the number of popular votes for Kamala, and 2) trying to alter the results for down-ballot races, especially House races, hoping Republicans will instead win them.
The Republicans haven’t won the popular vote for president since 2004, when George W. Bush won while still riding high on public sentiment from 9/11. Bush 43 lost the 2000 popular vote, but the Supreme Court appointed him president. Before that, the last Republican to win the popular vote was his father, George H.W. Bush, in 1988. When Bush 41 lost his re-election bid to Democrat Bill Clinton in 1992, he was angry and hurt, and it took him a little while to get used to the loss. But he immediately conceded and didn’t claim the election was fraudulent because he lost. He certainly did not send his supporters to the U.S. Capitol to try to overturn the results of the election he legally lost.
Donald J. Trump is the only American president in history to fight his re-election loss. He also did not provide a regular and valuable transition committee for President-elect Joe Biden. Trump even locked the White House doors, and Joe and Jill had to wait outside until a member of the Marines who was now under Joe was found to unlock them. Tacky.
So what do WE do?
Vote in such great numbers up and down the Democratic ballot that the presidential election is not close, that we win back the House, and that we keep and expand the Senate.
Ensure that everyone you know who has not yet voted checks their registration and votes the entire ballot on or before November 5. Do that NOW.
Be prepared to wait for the election to be officially called. In 2020, the election wasn’t officially called until the next Saturday.
The Republicans and Putin are putting out false polls showing Trump ahead, especially in swing states. They are doing this so they can claim that the election is fraudulent because all of the “polls” said Trump would win. Remember that polls do not vote; people vote.
