“It’s the Economy, Stupid!”
That famous statement originated when Bill Clinton ran for president in 1992 against incumbent President George H.W. Bush. Jim Carville, a strategist during the campaign, coined it. It was directed at the campaign's workers and intended as one of three messages for them to focus on. At the time, there was a recession going on.
Today, in 2024, with Vice President Kamala Harris running against former President Donald Trump, it is still “…the economy, Stupid!” However, the “Stupid” today means Donald Trump and the Republican Party. They are still trying to convince potential voters that the economy was better under Trump than Biden-Harris and that only Trump can make the American economy “great again.”
However, The Choice is clear: Trump and the Republicans are lying (again) because the Biden-Harris administration has been the best for America and the global economy in history. If the economy is very important to you and your circumstances. Voting for Harris and Walz and Democrats across the ballot is the solution.
No 3rd-party or other non-Democratic Party candidate has the recent experience, historical knowledge, or federal legislative backing to keep the economy moving in the right way for all Americans.
Inflation, Recession, Unemployment, and the Stock Market: During the 2020 presidential campaign, Donald Trump warned that if Joe Biden were elected, inflation would rise, the country would go into a recession, and the stock market would crash. The exact opposite has happened:
The inflation rate is the lowest it’s been for decades.
Inflation was reduced without causing a recession. This is called a “soft landing.”
Unemployment, including Black unemployment, is also the lowest it has been in decades. The jobs report shows large increases every month.
The stock market has reached historic highs since the Biden-Harris policies were implemented. High stock prices positively affect people’s retirement plans and pensions, even if they are not regularly active in stock market investing.
Gas Prices: Gasoline prices are the lowest since the pandemic's beginning, averaging around $3.00/gallon in most places. Gas prices respond to supply and demand and are often set by the availability of crude from the Middle East and reserves in America. Gas prices rose to almost $5 a gallon as America emerged from the pandemic and demand rose. However, President Biden and his economic team instituted policies that quickly reduced gas prices.
Gas prices could rise again depending on what is currently occurring in the Middle East and Ukraine, but President Biden is monitoring and regulating crude oil reserves here in America to help mitigate any negative overseas effects.
Grocery Prices: The cost of groceries, including food, is still higher than it should be. The price of eggs and chicken often rises when chickens are affected by bird flu, which happens more often than people know. The prices of other grocery items are determined not by the administration but by corporate greed. Since the pandemic, the few corporations that control the majority of grocery items have kept prices artificially high because they want to keep their profits high.
From 2020 to 2024, the cost to feed a family of four grew 2.5 more than the inflation rate, while corporate profits rose five times faster than inflation from 2020 to 2022. Big companies benefited from worsening the supply chain problems that raised prices during the pandemic, but after the supply chain problems abated, the corporations did not decrease their prices or their profits.
Crime: Contrary to what Trump and the Republicans want you to believe, crime has come down in almost all areas, including in big cities. When the economy is growing and most people are working, the causes of criminal activity and the number of crimes, in general, go down. The number of crimes committed by immigrants, documented or not, is much lower than crimes committed by native-born Americans, and the great majority of fentanyl being brought into this country is transported here by Americans.
Federal Jobs and Agencies: Trump and Project 2025 have pledged to fire hundreds of thousands of non-partisan career federal employees and replace them with Trump loyalists. They also plan to eliminate or privatize the federal agencies that keep us safe and secure, such as the FDA, the EPA, the Department of Education, and NOAA, which is in charge of monitoring and advising on weather conditions, including the more frequent and extreme hurricanes.
Our democratic republic: No policy initiative, no data or facts, nothing else matters if our Constitution is destroyed, if the rule of law doesn't apply to government officials, including the president, or if we have an authoritarian dictator in charge of our government and MAGA Republicans in charge of state and local governments.
The choice is clear: we are not voting just for a Democrat or a Republican with differing political views.
We are voting for our (not always perfect) democracy, our freedoms, and the freedoms of others.
Voting for a third-party candidate or not voting at all is not an option. Not only can Kennedy, Stein, or West not win or be in a position to help all Americans, but votes for them take away votes for the Democrats.
Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, and local and state Democrats are the only ones who can and will move us forward.
